The short answer: Idaho Running Company hosts three free weekly groups from our store at 1758 W State Street: a Tuesday walking group at 5pm, a Tuesday speed workout at 6pm and a Thursday group run at 6pm. No sign-up, no cost, and all faces, all paces are welcome.
If you've never been to a group run, it can feel intimidating. It shouldn't be. Here's exactly what to expect, how group runs work, and why so many Boise runners and walkers say joining one was the best thing they did for their running.
Our weekly groups
Tuesday Walking Group, 5:00pm
A social walk for every fitness level. Perfect if you're new to moving, coming back from an injury or a break, or just like company on your walk. Walking is real exercise, and walkers are every bit as welcome here as runners.
Tuesday Speed Workout, 6:00pm
A structured session to build speed and strength. Workouts are built so everyone works at their own effort level, which means you don't need to be fast to join. Speed work is one of the best ways to get fitter and break through a plateau, and it's more fun with a group.
Thursday Group Run, 6:00pm
Our weekly community run. Come for the miles, stay for the people. It's the easiest way to meet other runners in Boise.
What to expect at your first group run
- Say hi. Come inside the store and let us know it's your first time. We'll introduce you around.
- Quick welcome. We go over the plan for the day, including the route or workout.
- Find your pace. Run or walk at a comfortable effort. Nobody gets left behind, and there's no such thing as too slow.
- Finish back at the store. Stick around, grab water and get to know people. This is where friendships start.
Why run with a group?
- Accountability. It's much easier to show up when people expect you.
- Consistency. A standing weekly run builds the habit that makes everything else easier.
- Safety. Especially on dark winter evenings.
- Learning. Pick up pacing, training, race and gear tips from runners of all experience levels.
- Friends. Many of the best running friendships, and race-day cheer squads, start at a group run.
Group run etiquette
- Run no more than two side by side on sidewalks and shared paths so others can pass.
- Call out "on your left" when passing walkers, runners and cyclists.
- Follow traffic signals and wait for the group at crossings.
- Keep earbuds at a low volume or leave them home so you can hear the group and traffic.
- Look out for each other. If someone is falling behind, slow down or loop back.
Running safely in the dark
For much of the year, our evening groups finish after sunset. Be seen and be safe:
- Wear a headlamp or chest light. Nite Howl and Petzl make great options.
- Add reflective or light-up gear, ideally on moving parts like wrists and ankles.
- Wear bright layers, and avoid all-black outfits.
- Carry your phone and ID.
What to bring
- Water, especially in summer
- A light layer you can tie around your waist
- A headlamp and reflective gear when it's dark
- Comfortable shoes. If yours are worn out, come in for a free fitting before the run.
